So we took the shortblock to a reputable engine machine shop for analysis. They told (and showed us) that the thrust bearing surfaces were essentially eaten up, and said that was the source of the problem.

Aug 27, 2011 · The front seal leak, while annoying, should make no difference on oil pressure. I am guessing if it is new, the conditioner won't help. If it is one of them annoying rope seals, you have my sympathy! You may be onto something about the pressure relief spring being weak. Even 15 psi will throw oil a long way so I think your new gauge is right.

If you can get oil into the gallery - e.g through the oil pressure switch or at the filter housing - so it drains back down to the pump it'll do the job.
